A summary of our personnel's experience:

Elizabeth King FCA CTA

Eliza brings over 20 years of experience in accountancy and taxation to Lions Accountants Limited.

After schooling in North Yorkshire she trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant whilst working for a top 20 firm in County Durham. She spent 8 years with the firm specialising in small and owner-managed business accounts and tax returns, both incorporated and unincorporated.

A move to Cambridge in 1997 saw her take a position with a prominent independent firm and follow up her Chartered Accountancy exams with the more specialist Chartered Institute of Taxation exams, becoming a member in 1999 after again achieving first time passes. During her 7 years with the firm, she oversaw a portfolio of owner-managed businesses and had responsibility for over 175 personal and business tax returns. More recently, Eliza has worked in the tax department of the Cambridge branch of an East Anglian firm as a Tax Senior.

Eliza has broadened her skills by qualifying in 2005 as a generalist adviser for the Citizens Advice Bureau, giving advice to the general public on benefits, employment law, housing and personal debt. Eliza has also been an active volunteer for the tax charity, Tax Help for Older People, which provides free tax advice to anyone on a limited income (aged over 60) and treasurer for her local pre-school.

Chris King BSc CTA - see my LinkedIn Profile

After passing his A levels, Chris took a degree course in Accounting/Finance and Maths and graduated in 1989. He then spent 6 months working and travelling in California and the rest of the USA before starting a Chartered Accountancy training contract with a top 20 firm in 1990 based in Co Durham. His training included accounts preparation, audit, tax compliance and tax planning.

Having qualified as both a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser, Chris joined a Cambridgeshire frm of Chartered Accountants in 1997 as one of 7 partners, becoming their Tax Partner. Chris was responsible for the compliance tax department of the Cambridge office (6 staff looking after over 1,000 tax returns), for servicing the tax planning needs of the firm's individual and varied business clients (turnovers ranging from £10,000 to £40m) and for his own portfolio of clients.

The type of issues advised on by Chris during his time at Cambridge included:

  • New business set-up;
  • Company reorganisations and demergers;
  • Tax investigations;
  • Dividend and salary policies for companies;
  • Company sales and capital gains planning;
  • Inheritance tax planning.
  • Employment status and IR35;
  • Settlement legislation including Arctic Systems tax case;

Chris later helped deal with the demerger of the Cambridge office from the other 2 offices in 2005 thus forming a new 3 partner firm which was subsequently merged with the Suffolk based Ensors in late 2006 becoming their Cambridge office.

Chris has a specialism in the UK tax rules for qualifying Furnished Holiday Lets including capital allowances claims on plant and machinery integral to the property (such as electrics, heating and plumbing) and in fact Chris & Eliza own their own qualifying Furnished Holiday Let in the EU.
